The Rest Is Politics

Expert political analysis. Opposing perspectives. Civilised debate.

Alastair Campbell and Rory Stewart discuss the biggest issues of the day in UK politics and international news, from their different sides of the political spectrum. Former Labour strategist and spokesman Alastair and former Conservative minister Rory leverage their insider knowledge to “disagree agreeably” on subjects ranging from geopolitics, Westminster scandals and the rise of populism to complex ideological issues and foreign policy. They also interview heads of state and other leading figures on the global stage and engage with their listeners on weekly Question Time episodes.

Alastair
Campbell

Alastair Campbell is a writer, podcaster, communicator, campaigner and strategist best known for his role as former British Prime Minister Tony Blair’s spokesman, press secretary and director of communications and strategy.

Still active in politics and campaigns in Britain and overseas, he now splits his time between writing, speaking, broadcasting, charities and consultancy - bringing decades of experience in leadership, messaging and power to a wide public audience.

He has written 19 books in the past 16 years, including 11 volumes of diaries, four novels, a number-one bestselling analysis of winning in politics, business and sport,  Winners and How They Succeed, and two personal accounts of depression and the pursuit of happiness.

His work as a mental health advocate has been widely recognised: he co-founded the all-party campaign Equality4MentalHealth, was honoured as a Mind Champion of the Year and received an honorary fellowship of the Royal College of Psychiatrists for breaking down stigma and fighting for better services.

In spring 2022, Alastair launched The Rest Is Politics with former Cabinet minister Rory Stewart - a show that has regularly topped UK charts and sold out major venues for live events. The pair also front The Rest Is Politics: Leading, interviewing former prime ministers and global figures. Alastair remains a sought-after speaker on leadership and communications and continues to advise governments, charities and organisations internationally.

Rory
Stewart

Rory Stewart has had a remarkable career spanning diplomacy, conflict, politics, writing and academia. He served in the UK Diplomatic Service, was the British representative to Montenegro after the Kosovo conflict and later became coalition deputy-governor of provinces in southern Iraq following the 2003 invasion - experiences that informed his writing and public worldview.

On leave from the Foreign Office, Rory walked for 21 months across Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India and Nepal, staying in hundreds of village houses along the way. His journey became the award-winning book The Places in Between, a New York Times bestseller. He later served as chair and CEO of the Turquoise Mountain Foundation in Kabul, building a major organisation focused on restoration, education and crafts - and was appointed the Ryan Family Professor of the Practice of Human Rights at Harvard University’s Kennedy School.

Rory entered parliament in 2010, served as an MP until 2019 and held senior ministerial roles across international development, justice, environment and rural affairs, ultimately becoming secretary of state for international development. Today he is a senior fellow at Yale, teaching politics and international relations, and co-hosts The Rest Is Politics and The Rest Is Politics: Leading - bringing deep global insight, moral clarity and firsthand experience into the conversations shaping Britain and the world.
